3 Days with Glacier Hiking, Ice Camping & Local Flavors | Kangerlussuaq

Arrival and camping on the Ice Sheet

Your adventure begins when you arrive in Kangerlussuaq in the morning, where you will then check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. Hereafter, you will have time to enjoy central comfort, warm hospitality, and scenic mountain views from the conveniently located hotel inside the airport.

Following check-in, you will be provided with a sandwich lunch. Afterward, at noon, you will meet your guide at the Polar Lodge, where you then will board a specialized 4WD vehicle equipped with panoramic windows. Hereafter you will drive approximately one hour through the Arctic wilderness towards Point 660 – your gateway to Greenland's impressive Ice Sheet. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to spot local wildlife, such as musk oxen, Arctic foxes, and ptarmigans.

Upon arrival at Point 660, you will receive a safety briefing from your experienced glacier guide, who then will introduce you to essential gear – including crampons. It is important to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, as crampons will not fit securely or comfortably onto flexible shoes such as sneakers.

Hereafter you will begin a two-hour hike across the stunning ice landscape to your campsite. When you arrive at camp, you will help pitch your own 3-person tents, set up the communal 12-person dining tent, and assist in collecting fresh water.

After camp is set, you will have a moment to relax with a hot drink and sweet snacks. Depending on the weather, there may be a short exploration nearby. Later, you will gather in the communal tent to enjoy a hearty trekking meal and storytelling beneath Greenland's magical Midnight Sun.

Ice Sheet adventure and Greenlandic buffet

Begin your day energized by a hearty breakfast enjoyed in the cozy comfort of your tent. Hereafter, you will set off on a breathtaking 3-4 hour hike back to Point 660, taking in spectacular views and capturing unforgettable memories along the ice-covered trails.

Upon returning to Point 660, you will savor lunch together before boarding the specialized 4WD vehicle for a scenic drive back to Kangerlussuaq. You will have time to refresh and relax in your room, before heading out by bus in the evening to Restaurant Roklubben.

Here, overlooking a serene lake, you will round off your glacier experience with a mouthwatering Greenlandic buffet featuring freshly caught shrimp, delicate halibut, tender musk ox, and savory reindeer. The dinner is included, while drinks are at your own expense.

After dinner, the bus will comfortably return you to your hotel for a relaxing and well-deserved night's rest.

BBQ at Russell Glacier

Today begins with a delicious breakfast at the hotel. Hereafter, you will check out and embark on another unforgettable excursion – this time to the stunning Russell Glacier for a Greenlandic BBQ!

You will travel in a comfortable 4WD vehicle designed for the rugged Arctic terrain, with large panoramic windows offering spectacular views along the way. Soon you will find yourself surrounded by Arctic tundra, desert-like valleys, and semi-barren plains teeming with wildlife such as musk oxen, reindeer, arctic hares, and perhaps even the elusive polar fox.

Upon arrival at Russell Glacier, you will enjoy a barbecue lunch featuring delicious Greenlandic specialties, all while taking in the breathtaking view of the glacier’s towering wall of ice. Under the constant sunlight of the Arctic summer, you may witness the dramatic spectacle of ice calving, accompanied by loud rumbles reminiscent of distant thunder.

The entire tour lasts approximately five hours, after which you will return comfortably to Kangerlussuaq, well in time for your flight departure at 18:10. It is now time to say goodbye – until next time!
